This policy explains what information kitchenouse.com collects, why, who else is involved, and what control you have. It applies to this website only.
The short version: you can read this site without telling us who you are. We do not ask you to create an account and we do not sell your personal information for money. Like most publishers, we use Google Analytics to understand which articles are read, and Google AdSense to show advertising, and both of those set cookies and process technical information about your visit. You can turn off ad personalization, block cookies, and ask us to delete anything you have sent us. Details follow.
Who we are
Kitchenouse (“we”, “us”, “our”) operates kitchenouse.com and is based in Delaware, United States. For any privacy question or request, use our contact page. We are the controller of the personal data described in this policy.
Information you give us directly
You only give us personal information if you choose to. That happens in two ways.
If you send us a message through the contact page, we receive your name, your email address, and whatever you write in the message. We use it to reply to you and to keep a record of the correspondence.
If commenting is enabled on an article and you leave a comment, WordPress records the name and email address you enter, your comment, your IP address and your browser user agent string. The name and comment are shown publicly. Your email address is not published, but it is stored, and it may be sent to an automated spam filtering service to determine whether the comment is spam.
Information collected automatically
When any visitor loads a page, some information is recorded without anyone typing it in. This is normal for websites and is largely how the internet works.
Our web server keeps access logs containing your IP address, the page requested, the date and time, the referring page and your browser user agent. These are used for security, diagnosing faults and preventing abuse.
Analytics and advertising cookies and identifiers record how you move through the site, roughly where in the world you are, what device and browser you use, and which advertisements you were shown. This is described in the next two sections.
Our security plugin records IP addresses and request patterns in order to identify and block automated attacks and scanning activity, and may block an IP address for a period.
Cookies and similar technologies
Cookies are small files stored by your browser. This site involves four broad kinds.
Essential cookies keep the site working. They handle things like page caching and, if you comment, remembering the details you entered so you do not retype them. The site cannot function properly without these.
Analytics cookies are set by Google Analytics and tell us which articles are read, how visitors arrive, and where people leave. We look at this in aggregate, to decide what to write and what to fix. We do not use it to identify individuals.
Advertising cookies are set by Google and its advertising partners to select the ads you see, limit how often you see the same one, and measure whether ads work.
Security mechanisms may store information needed to distinguish legitimate visitors from automated attacks.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Blocking essential cookies may stop parts of the site working. Blocking advertising cookies does not remove ads, it makes them less relevant.
Third parties we use
We name these specifically so you can read their policies and exercise your rights directly with them.
Google Analytics measures site traffic. Google processes this data on our behalf. See Google’s Privacy Policy. You can opt out of Google Analytics across all websites using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
Google AdSense serves the display advertising on this site. Google and its partners use cookies and advertising identifiers to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites. Google’s own account of this is at How Google uses information from sites that use our services. We may add other advertising networks in future and will update this policy when we do.
Amazon Associates. Some links to Amazon carry a tracking code that tells Amazon the visit came from us, so that a commission can be attributed. If you follow one, Amazon’s own Privacy Notice governs what happens on their site. We do not receive your Amazon account details, your order contents or your payment information. Our hosting and security providers process server logs and IP addresses in order to deliver the site and protect it from attack.
How we use this information
We use it to deliver and maintain the site, to reply to messages you send us, to understand which content is useful so we can write more of what works, to display advertising that funds the site, to detect and block abuse, spam and automated attacks, and to comply with legal obligations.
We do not use your information to make automated decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects on you.
Legal bases, for visitors in the UK and EEA
Where UK or EU data protection law applies, we rely on the following. Our legitimate interests, in operating a functioning website, understanding aggregate readership, and keeping the site secure. Your consent, where required for non-essential cookies and advertising. Our legal obligations, where we must retain or disclose information.
Where we rely on consent, you may withdraw it at any time, and doing so does not affect anything done before you withdrew it.
Sharing and disclosure
We do not sell your personal information for money. We share it only with the service providers named above, in order for them to perform their function, and where we are legally required to disclose it, for example in response to a valid legal process, or where disclosure is necessary to protect our rights, our safety, or the safety of others.
International transfers
We are based in the United States and our service providers operate globally, so information collected through this site may be processed in the United States or other countries whose data protection laws differ from those where you live. Where personal data is transferred out of the UK or EEA, our providers rely on transfer mechanisms recognized under applicable law, such as Standard Contractual Clauses.
How long we keep it
Contact messages are kept while the conversation is active and for a reasonable period afterwards. Comments and their associated data are kept indefinitely while published, so that follow-up replies make sense, until you ask us to remove them. Server and security logs are kept for a limited period for diagnostic and security purposes. Analytics data is retained according to Google’s retention settings for our property.
Security
The site is served over HTTPS and we take reasonable technical measures to protect information, including firewall and malware protection and restricted administrative access. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security, and you send us information at your own risk.
Your choices
You can control ad personalization at Google My Ad Center, or at Google Ad Settings if you are not signed in. You can opt out of personalized advertising from many vendors at once at aboutads.info/choices. You can block cookies, clear them, or browse privately using your browser’s own settings. You can ask us to delete a comment or a message you sent us through our contact page.
Your rights in the UK and EEA
If UK or EU data protection law applies to you, you have the right to ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, to have inaccurate data corrected, to have data erased, to restrict or object to our processing, to receive your data in a portable format, and to withdraw consent where processing is based on it.
To exercise any of these, contact us through the contact page. We will respond within the time the law allows. You also have the right to complain to your national data protection authority, and in the United Kingdom that is the Information Commissioner’s Office.
Your rights in California
If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended gives you the right to know what categories of personal information we have collected and the purposes for collecting it, to request deletion of personal information we hold about you, to request correction of inaccurate information, and not to be discriminated against for exercising these rights.
The categories we collect are identifiers such as IP address, and where you provide them your name and email address, internet and network activity information such as the pages you view and how you arrived, and approximate location inferred from your IP address. The purposes are set out above.
We do not sell personal information for monetary consideration. However, California law defines “selling” and “sharing” broadly, and the use of third party advertising cookies for cross-context behavioral advertising may fall within those definitions. You can opt out of that by turning off ad personalization at the Google links in the section above, by using the industry opt-out at aboutads.info, or by blocking third party cookies in your browser.
To make a request, contact us through the contact page. We may need to verify your identity, which for most visitors means asking you to confirm information only you would know, such as the email address used to send us a message.
Other US state privacy laws
Residents of other states with comprehensive privacy laws, including Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, Texas and Oregon among others, have broadly similar rights to access, correct, delete and opt out of targeted advertising. Children’s privacy
This site is intended for adults and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Links to other websites
We link to other sites, including official food safety resources and retailers. This policy does not cover them. Once you follow a link, the destination site’s own privacy policy applies, and we have no control over what they collect.
Changes to this policy
We update this policy when the site changes or the law does. The revised version applies from the date it is posted, shown at the top of this page. Material changes will be reflected here, so please check back occasionally.
